Manfred Hamil is one of the many alias used by music producer Steve Kelly.
Steve started producing electronica back in 2001 under the pseudonym of SK123. After building up an early online presence, predominately through Last.FM and its small band of unsigned artists, Steve retired the SK123 moniker and stared work on more targeted alter egos, Douglas Deep, Macerator and Manfred Hamil.
As Douglas Deep, Steve focuses mainly on Techno, while as Macerator, the musical focus is predominately on broken beats, glitches and Drum and Bass. However, with Manfred Hamil, Steve produces the more ambient, softer side of electronica. Inspired by the releases of legendary record labels such as City Centre Offices, Erased Tapes and NinjaTune, Manfred released his ambient debut album ‘Soft Furnishings’ in 2014, emphasising the focus predominately on the darker, more melancholic side of electronic music.
In 2017 Manfred released his 2nd album, ‘Pigeonhole’. Warmly received by his small but growing fan base, Pigeonhole developed Manfred’s sound further. More Contemplative and wistful than ‘Soft Furnishings’, Pigeonhole flitted between soft piano and drifting soundscapes to driving Germanic 4/4 beats. It was not without its recognition too, picking up PsychoNavigation’s Album of the Week and a live 4 track set broadcast on Mark Whitby’s Dandelion Radio Show, this resulted in the track ‘Hollow’ being included in Dandelion Radio’s John Peel inspired Festive 50 countdown for the year’s best tracks as voted by their listeners.
2018 saw the release of Manfred’s 3rd LP, ‘Echoes of Earlier Work and Other People’, with its sea of progressive piano arps, vocal flutters and found sounds counter balanced against glitched out beats, Manfred may have finally found the sound he was looking for.
